Understanding the Team
“As individuals they are each brilliant and I get on well, on a 1 to 1 basis, with each of them, so why is it that when they come together as a team I feel like I am herding cats trying to get anything done?” NHS CEO 2003
While it is possible to have worse team problems than this, even basic team dynamics can be a drain on productivity.
We know that “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. is a good truism and If you have been in a team, which is really functioning as a team, you will be able to testify to this truth.
But getting a team to work is not luck. Having away days or social events to break down the barriers in the team can work and it is possible to build team in this organic way, but it is not guaranteed as it only takes one “difficult person” to block progress or create division.
Our starting place is that there are no “difficult people” but that there are people who are difficult to understand, and if you can't understand the person it is hard to value them and consequently they don't feel valued and will “act out” various stress behaviours. This “acting out” leads you to understand the person less and consequently value them less and they feel more outside the group and so on.
Stress behaviour within the team is hard to understand and hard to manage unless you have a really powerful tool to get into what is going on. That's where the Birkman Method® with See Your True Colours will help you understand what is going on.
In this program we offer:
- Initial session of 1-2 hours with the team to introduce the concepts and program.
